      Description

      Name: jk109818 Date: 01/21/2003

      FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
      java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-b01, mixed mode)

      FULL OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION :
      Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]

      VIDEO DRIVER :
The driver used is the latest (v5.0.2195.175) for the Lynx3DM (SM721)
and Windows 2000. The driver can be downloaded from the following URL:
      http://www.siliconmotion.com/eng/pageHub.html?band=lowband&url=accept.html&title=Support

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Random color effects can be observed on the user interface
of Java applications running on JRE 1.4.x. These effects do
NOT occur when running on JREs 1.3.x and with a color
resolution other than 24-bit. Hence it's not a video driver
      problem.

I'm aware that 24-bit has been a problem with some previous
JDKs. Apparently, new (or old) problems slipped in again.

REGRESSION. Last worked in version 1.3.1

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Run ANY application on JRE 1.4.x with 24-bit color.
Reproduced with Sun ONE Studio 4 Update 1 and jEdit 4.0.

      EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
On request, I'll be sending screenshots clearly showing what
I mean by random color effects.

      REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.

      CUSTOMER WORKAROUND :
Either use JRE 1.3.x or change color to anything but 24-bit.
Verified with JRE 1.3.1 and with 16-bit and 32-bit color.

      Release Regression From : 1.3.1
The above release value was the last known release where this
bug was known to work. Since then there has been a regression.
