A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Standard installation with the self-extracting script creates the directory .systemPrefs at the root of the SDK. The runtime environment of the SDK is looking for it at the root of the JRE contained within the SDK ($JAVA_HOME/jre).
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
1. - the directory /etc/.java/.systemPrefs does not exist and there are no access permission for a user to create it.
2. - the directory $JAVA_HOME/.systemPrefs exists and has read/execute permission for the user
3. - the files within $JAVA_HOME/.systemPrefs exist and have read permission for the user
4. - start any java application
Messages are logged to the console concerning the system preferences every 30 secs.
This bug can be reproduced always.
CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
copy the .systemPrefs directory to the subdirectory jre within the SDK
