JVM crashes silently when running Eclipse-based application

    Details

    • Subcomponent:
    • CPU:
      x86_64
    • OS:
      windows_10

      Description

      ADDITIONAL SYSTEM INFORMATION :
      JRE 1.8.0_251 (64 bit)

      A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
      Since JRE 1.8.0_251 (64 bit) on Windows, several Eclipse-based applications just crash at startup silently without any further warning/message. I found out it is related to a crash and a core dump is created under:
      C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Local\CrashDumps\eclipse.exe.[PID].dmp

      It works just fine if I use the previous JRE (i.e. build 1.8.0_241).

      REGRESSION : Last worked in version 8

      STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
      The easiest way to reproduce that I found out is the following:
      * Download the Eclipse Proton version (https://www.eclipse.org/photon/)
      * Extract it, create a sub-folder "jre" and put the JRE 1.8.0_251 (64 bit) into that folder to ensure Eclipse uses this version
      * run eclipse.exe
      * [CRASH]
      * ow if you replace the JRE with the version before (build 1.8.0_241) it works.

      EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
      EXPECTED -
      It should not crash, esp. not silently. :-)
      ACTUAL -
      Silent crash.

      CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
      Use a previous Java JRE version (anything before 1.8.0_251)

      FREQUENCY : always
