Clear specification of audio files supported.

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
In the javax.sound.sampled package there's no clear indication of which file formats are actually supported by it. I had assumed it would support mp3, it being a popular format; but apparently it doesn't.
It's all very vague in the documentation about what is/isn't supported. It should really just have a clear statement in the pertinent files as to which formats are supported. As a programmer, I'm not going to know the finer details of audio encoding; I just want to know which extensions (eg wav, midi, mp3) are supported.

I also tried doing many google searches as well as searches of the SE documentation, and NONE of them ever gave a clear and current answer (the answers I could find were from like 2010) to the straightforward question of what audio formats java supports.
